This week in preschool....September 22-26, 2014

Your steadfast love, O Lords, extends to the heavens.  Psalm 36:5
This week we learned about Noah, and how God protected Noah and his family from the flood.  God takes care of us too.  We extended our learning in our small groups this week when we sorted animals by farm or wild, water or land, and 2 feet or 4 feet.  We guessed the color or guessed the animal using clues, we played the color game, where children were dismissed from the carpet area by recognizing the color that was called and seeing if they were wearing it.   We also practiced using positional words by placing animals, above, behind, inside, outside, next to, etc.. the fence.

The children decided it would be easier to use the cart to move the blocks, and then they said they needed the workbench from the other classroom and tools.  We have been asked for wood and paint,  I wonder what they are planning next.  Stay tuned.

In Art, we painted at the easel, we made pasta pictures, we made chalk designs, using wet chalk, we made a musical masterpiece where each time the music stopped, we got a new color of crayon, and incorporated a little science into our color splash where we used a baby wipe and watched the color expand.

We also made a class rainbow and sorted colored pasta and graphed them.  The children learned math with a bar graph.

Here's some problem solving going on:  How can I get those noodles back into the bag the easiest way.
Outside time helps us work on our large motor skills, such as climbing and it strengthens our upper body, then we can enjoy sliding down.

We have animal and rainbow tracers out this week.  This helps us practice holding a pencil the correct way and following lines to get ready for writing.

We continue to have our Rice table this week, we love to fill the containers, which is great for eye-hand coordination and measuring, and pouring.  We use funnels and scoops, and our hands.

This week at our light table we have light table legos, and there was building going on.

We have a cutting station set up for the children to go to and practice their skills, when they are cutting at home, please help them with the correct hand position of thumb in the little hole fingers in the larger hole, and thumbs up.

We enjoy being able to help in the classroom, here's the chair helper pushing in the chairs.  When children do the calendar they are practicing pre-reading skills by going left to right on the calendar and then down to the next line.
This week we have the Gears out for explorations.  It takes practice to get them lined up to see them in motion.

We are also learning to find our name and put it on the tray which lets one of the teachers know that we would like to participate in Art.  This helps children with the skill of self regulation, that if there is not a spot for me now, I know that I will get a turn.
